Right, I'll get straight to the point. The central heating is on.

When two savvy fashion folk and a former investment
banker-turned-serious-financial-director get together and think they have
got something to shout about, it's wise to listen. Lucille Lewin, after all,
is the woman who with her husband Rick founded and ran the fashion chain
Whistles (bought by Baugur); Belinda Morris is a respected fashion
journalist; and I had only to see a picture of the financial director, Clare
Nicholls, looking divine in a 1960s vintage pink-beaded Yves Saint Laurent
evening dress to know that here was somebody who knew about quality.

Amid the champagne, love and laughter of her wedding day, one of Kate Murphy's
older friends struck a sour note. “It's ridiculous that you're getting
married at this age,” she said. “I mean, it's like Mars bars, you like them
now, but how do you know that you'll like them in ten years? And at least
with a Mars bar you can always change to a Twix.”

Clearly the entire country is in love with Cheryl Cole (née Tweedy), one fifth
of Girls Aloud, Britain's Most Successful Girl Band Ever, one quarter of the
judging panel on The X Factor and wife of the footballer Ashley Cole. The
Daily Star declared her “only slightly less popular than God” although given
that church ratings these days fall considerably short of those of The X
Factor, that's a bit of a backhanded compliment.

When Richard Gere picked up Julia Roberts in his Lotus Esprit in Pretty Woman,
it was the start of a great Hollywood romance. The classic prostitute with a
heart of gold, she was transformed almost instantly into a glamous sex
kitten, equally at home shopping on Rodeo Drive, decorating his arm at the
opera in San Francisco or stamping the divots at a polo match. And, of
course, there was a fairytale ending in which the corporate prince rescued
the fair maiden as she promised to “rescue him right back”.

Vera, Vera. How could you even contemplate launching a Barbie wedding dress -
for human beings? This is Vera Wang by the way, an alumna of the Sorbonne in
Paris, a history graduate of the academically rigorous Sarah Lawrence
College in Westchester County, New York State, the erstwhile fashion editor
of American Vogue and the designer behind a hugely successful bridal line,
oft worn by such luminous marrying types as Uma Thurman and ... J-Lo, Mariah
Carey, Sharon Stone. Hmm, perhaps therein lies the answer. Mattel, the toy
company that sells a Barbie every two seconds, has deep coffers, especially
when it comes to commemorating the 50th anniversary of its “iconic” cash
cow. End of mystery.

The risks of trying to conceive a baby later in life, amid statistics about
fertility plummeting with age and the relentless tick of the biological
clock often hit the headlines.
